EPDM Pond Liner
The Unique Properties Of EPDM pond liners have a lot of valuable benefits. This product is made by Firestone PondGard. The EPDM pond liner is a highly stable material, fish and plant friendly. The Firestone PondGard logo imprinted on the EPDM liner indicates that it is specially formulated to be safe for exposure to fish and plant life in decorative ponds.
It stays flexible in a variety of temperatures enabling it to be installed year round. PondGard EPDM pond liner has high expansion and contraction characteristics which enable it to conform to objects in the subgrade. This feature is especially important after the pond is in service when earth movement, or erosion, could cause roots and rocks to be dislodged beneath the membrane, placing stress on the liner.
PondGard's high elongation properties will enable it to stretch over the object. A garden pond liner should conform nicely to bottom contours. You want to have both shallow and deeper areas, and even shelves upon which potted aquatic plants can be set within the pond.EPDM (ethylene-propylene rubber) is the best liner marterial your money can buy. It is thicker than most pond liners, at 40 to 60 mils. It is also a more rubbery (as in stretchy) plastic, which adds to its life and suefulness. It will stretch around a rock or obstacle in the ground instead of tearing. But there is bad news. As with all things of the highest quality, it is more expensive. You can expect to pay twice as much for an EPDM liner as you would for PVC. The long life of 20-plus years more than makes up for the up-front cost, however; so if you are building a pond that is meant to last, go with EPDM.You simply cannot build a good pond without a good liner because it is the skin of the pond and one of the most important components of a successful water garden or backyard Koi ponds. The EPDM liner is highly recommended not only from the Koi Pond Guide experts but from many other experts as well. Here’s a tip: To get the proper measurements for the purpose of buying liner, place one end of a string 18" from the side of the hole and drop it down, across, and up to the other side at the widest part of the hole. Then 18" on the other side. Measure the string. (Remember — once liner is cut there is no returning it and seams will probably eventually leak). Budget TipMake the most of your EPDM liner. Since it is priced by the square foot you should avoid g oing up t o the next size width. For example: If your measurements indicate taht you need a 21x21 ft. piece of liner backfill or adjust the hole so that you only need a 20x21 ft. piece. This could save you over $100. 
Types of LinersThere are several options for garden pond lining. Preformed pond liner is an off the shelf, instant pond approach. Concrete is a heavier, handmade method of construction. A Flexible liner is the no-holds barred method for the creative water gardener. There is a market for all three types of garden pond liners but the best one for you will depend on your budget, the ease of installation, and guarantee. A flexible liner is probably the most cost-effective. A preformed pond is more expensive garden pond liner but can be installed in a day. A concrete pond, however, can take weeks to construct and is also backbreaking work.I do not recommend doing this yourself. In a preformed pond the shelves for plants and wildlife are molded for you, in a liner kit, the shelves have to be excavated as such so that the liner itself forms to the shape.
Preformed Ponds are manufactured in two unique designs. The first, being a preformed shell that has a static shape and dimensions. The second, being a preformed folding garden pond liner, which is ideal for shipment and storage.
Once installed both of these ponds look and feel essentially the same. The difference being, folding ponds can be transported in a substantially smaller box, which means pickup is an option, and shipping costs can be lower. Both ponds are extremely durable and can withstand a temperature range from 0 F to 105 F. They also both feature an innovative design concept which incorporates textured ridges along the walls of the ponds. These ridges provide an area where beneficial bacteria can thrive and form growth colonies. This bacterium is essential for the natural balance of your ponds eco-system, and drastically reduces increased algae growth. Pre-formed plastic ponds should be available at your local home supply store or garden center. They range in sizes from less than 100 gallons to a few hundred gallons. Look for a container that has some depth to it; some of these small containers are very shallow. If your pond is not at least 3 to 4 feet deep you may have a few problems. First water lilies need some depth to grow properly. Second, if you live in a northern climate, a shallow pond will definitely freeze solid in the winter. Your fish and plants will not appreciate being made into popsicles! You can use several pre-formed ponds to build a series of pond that are connected. Some of these systems have plastic waterfalls that you can incorporate into your pond. If you do use one of these waterfalls, add rocks so it will look more natural. Preformed pond liners are ideal for first-time pond builders because they are extremely durable, and less susceptible to tears and punctures. Preformed ponds are easy to install and clean, but require more skill to fit the hole in the ground with the shape of the pond. Also, when properly supported, preformed ponds are ideal for above-ground, indoor, and patio setups.
Rigid Liner Installing a rigid garden pond liner is relatively straightforward. Leveling the pond can be the greatest challenge. It is wise to level the pond as you fill it with water and backfill it with soil at several intervals.
Concrete installations usually require a professional installation. Concrete is a medium that tends to crack as the ground freezes and thaws. I do not recommend doing a concrete pond yourself, I have never used concrete to build a pond so if you decide to go this route have it professionally installed.
Flexible garden pond liners are ideal for most anyone. They allow for easy and very forgiving installations, which consequently promotes greater creativity. Buy the best that you can afford, as generally, you do get what you pay for. Your liner should be installed over a protective underlay. Liners are sold either precut or packed off the roll. The liner should last 25 years but if you want it to last longer do not press down hard when installing, in case of sharp objects or protruding stones.

If you already have a natural pond on your property, you may just want to spruce things up a bit or add a few fish. Be careful with the types of water plants you add. Many are incredibly invasive and could quickly take over the entire pond.
 Pond liners are sold by the square foot and can be joined to form large liners. If you have an old swimming pool you can convert them to a large pond. A large, deep pond like an old swimming pool is an ideal home for Koi. Koi do really well when they can swim in deep water. Deep water also allows the Koi to grow to their true size. The disadvantage of a large pond is that it may be too deep for many water plants. In your pond use a variety of plants and fish so that it develops into a ecosystem. Waterfalls If you want to make a natural looking waterfall you can use the same stone that was used around the pond. Place flat pieces of stone onto a bed of mortar, on steps you formed in the compacted mound of soil. Make the waterfall’s path as irregular as possible. At the top of the waterfall, incorporate a waterfall box or a hose feeding from the pump via the pond’s filter. You can now trim any excess garden pond liner from around the pond and waterfall. Once the waterfall is set and is running with water, position additional rocks to fine-tune the flow of water down the waterfall.
When planning your pond, take into account where any filter will be located and how you are going to pipe water to and from it. You can, for example, remove water from the end furthest from the waterfall, process it with the filter and then pump it back to the top of the waterfall. This will help maintain water circulation within the garden pond liner, which helps insure oxygenated water throughout.
